The RIIRTM301E Operate Truck or Trailer Mounted Attenuators course is designed for traffic management and construction industry workers who need the specialist skills to safely operate truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs).
Truck and trailer mounted attenuators play a critical role in protecting roadworkers and motorists by absorbing the impact of collisions in live traffic environments. This nationally recognised unit equips participants with the knowledge and hands-on skills to set up, operate and maintain TMAs in accordance with workplace procedures, manufacturer instructions, and legislative requirements.
Prerequisites
Nil. There are no prerequisites for this course.
RTO Selection Criteria
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a current and valid Medium Rigid (MR) or higher heavy vehicle licence
- Have traffic management experience, demonstrated by one of the following:
- Holding a Statement of Attainment for any traffic management/control unit OR
- Holding a Statement of Attainment for any Austroads TMI / TC skill set OR
- Hold a Statement of Completion for any Austroads non practitioner course OR
- At least 3 months of traffic management work experience in the last 3 years
- Hold a current White Card (or Red Card)
- Be capable of self-directed learning and completing pre-course study
- Be physically able to meet the demands of operating TMAs, including lifting signs, setting up traffic devices, and climbing into and out of vehicles
If a student enrols with industry experience only (i.e. without completed Statements of Attainment or Austroads non or practitioner status), they must complete a Self-Declaration Form confirming their relevant industry experience.
Participants must be able to speak and understand basic English and have the physical capacity to complete the course.
Department of Transport TMA Operator Requirements
As of 1 September 2025, TMA drivers will be able to complete the Traffic Management Implementation (TMI) Non-Practitioner Course instead of the full skill set previously required.
It is important to note that this non-practitioner training applies only to TMA drivers who do not implement or control traffic. Where TMA drivers are required to perform those duties, the full skill set will still be necessary.
Note that a TMA ONLY operator must hold:
- Hold a current and valid Heavy Vehicle drivers’ licence of a suitable class to operate the TMA vehicle.
- Hold the Traffic Management Implementation non-practitioner Statement of Completion at the appropriate road category.
- Hold Construction Safety Awareness Training Card (commonly referred to as White or Red Card).
- Have completed RIIRTM301E Operate a truck or trailer mounted attenuator.
A TMA operator who also conducts any other traffic management activities must hold:
- Hold a current and valid Heavy Vehicle drivers’ licence of a suitable class to operate the TMA vehicle.
- Hold the Traffic Management Implementation and/or Traffic Control skill sets at the appropriate road category.
- Hold Construction Safety Awareness Training Card (commonly referred to as White or Red Card).
- Have completed RIIRTM301E Operate a truck or trailer mounted attenuator.

Do I need any special qualifications before attending?
Yes. Participants must hold a current Medium Rigid (MR) or higher heavy vehicle licence, a White Card (or Red Card), and either have a Statement of Attainment for a traffic management unit (e.g. RIIWHS302E) or at least 3 months of traffic management work experience in the past 3 years.
