RIISAM202E – Isolate plant and machinery

The ability to safely isolate plant and machinery is essential in many workplaces. Construction Training Group’s Isolate Plant and Machinery training covers the skills and knowledge needed to identify energy sources, apply lockout/tagout procedures, and restore equipment to service safely. Participants learn to plan and prepare for isolating plant, set up safe work areas, and complete all necessary documentation (such as permit-to-work forms) before maintenance.

This nationally recognised course is applicable to operational roles across industries such as manufacturing, communications (including NBN), water and utilities, and civil construction, and is relevant to workers in general operations. It teaches how to handle statutory and permit requirements so that plant can be safely de-energised and re-energised.

Nil. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Applicants must:

  • Be currently working or have work experience in an operational role within one or more of the Australian industries/sectors such as civil construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, or pharmaceuticals;
  • Have completed a minimum of 2-months of work in such a role within the past 12 months;
  • Be capable of self-directed learning and able to complete some coursework independently prior to the face-to-face course session.

Applicants must complete a self-declaration form confirming their industry experience.

Participants must be able to speak and understand basic English and have the physical capacity to complete the course.

  • Planning and documentation: Understand how to interpret isolation procedures and permit-to-work documentation, and prepare work plans for isolating equipment.
  • Energy source isolation: Learn to identify and control different energy sources (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, etc.) on plant and machinery to prevent accidental start-up.
  • Lockout/Tagout procedures: Gain knowledge of lockout/tagout processes, including placement of locks, tags and barriers to secure equipment and prevent unauthorized operation.
  • Safe work area setup: Learn to establish and maintain safe isolation zones, using signage and barriers to restrict access during maintenance.
  • Returning plant to service: Understand the steps to safely re-energise equipment, including removal of isolation devices and completion of handover protocols.

Upon completion, participants will have the skills needed to isolate plant safely, manage hazardous energy, and comply with workplace permit requirements.

Course duration: 1 day (face-to-face)
Pre-learning: Required prior to attendance of face to face session.

The cost of our course is $225.00 per person (GST-free).

*Please note: A surcharge applies to private bookings scheduled on weekends.

  • What topics are covered in Isolate Plant training? This course covers planning and preparing for plant isolation, using permit-to-work systems, applying locks/tags to energy sources, identifying hazards during isolation, and properly restoring plant to service afterwards.

  • Who should take this course? Any worker who needs to safely isolate plant equipment – such as maintenance personnel, mechanics, or operators performing repairs. It is common in industries like construction, mining, drilling and other sectors where heavy machinery is used.

  • Is there an expiry on the Statement of Attainment? The Statement of Attainment for RIISAM202E does not have an expiry date. However, industry practice typically requires refresher training every 1–2 years or whenever regulations change, to ensure safety knowledge stays current.

  • Do I need any special qualification before attending? No prior qualifications are mandatory. Attendees simply need to meet the selection criteria above.
