This Gas Test Atmospheres course covers the skills and knowledge required to test and monitor atmospheric conditions using electronic gas detection equipment.
This includes interpreting readings and taking appropriate action to ensure a work area is safe, particularly in confined spaces and permit-required environments.

Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisite units required for this course.
Selection Criteria
To enrol, students must:
• Have basic written and spoken English
• Be able to read and interpret safety documentation (SWMS, SDS, permits, procedures)
• Have numeracy skills to interpret gas readings
• Be physically capable of performing required tasks
Students must also:
• Be currently working, or have recent experience, in industries such as construction, infrastructure, manufacturing, utilities or similar
• Have completed at least 2 months of relevant work in the past 12 months
• Have experience with workplace risk management and safe work practices
• Be capable of completing pre-course learning independently
A self-declaration confirming industry experience is required.
Key Course Information
This course covers the skills required to test workplace atmospheres using electronic gas detection equipment to determine whether conditions are safe for work.
It applies to situations such as:
• Confined spaces
• Enclosed or partially enclosed areas
• Permit-required work
• Tanks, silos, pits, pipes and shafts
• Hot work environments
• Open work areas requiring atmospheric monitoring
Students will learn how to interpret readings and take appropriate action based on results.
This course includes:
• Atmospheric hazards and contaminants
• Exposure limits and safe ranges
• Using electronic gas testing equipment
• Pre-entry and continuous monitoring
• Interpreting readings (oxygen, flammable and toxic gases)
• Risk controls and safe work procedures
• Emergency response actions
• Documentation and reporting requirements
Training is contextualised within a confined space environment.
Course Duration
This course is delivered in 4 hours face to face.
Pre-learning and a pre-theory assessment are mandatory and must be completed prior to attendance, ensuring face-to-face training time is focused on practical application and assessment.
