A confined space may be an area of restricted entry and exit, may have an atmosphere which contains potentially harmful levels of a contaminant, unsafe levels of oxygen or may cause engulfment. This Confined Space Entry Training Refresher Course in Melbourne is designed for persons working within or around limited spaces, or who engage in related outdoor recreational activities such as caving.

This confined space entry training course is designed to meet the training/certification requirements of industry. All listed units forming part of this course are clustered (grouped, taught and assessed together).

At the time of booking this Confined Space Entry Refresher Course, students will be eligible to book in for our complementary CPR training.

NEW TRAINING UNIT:

New to Construction Training Group. We can now offer onsite Working at Heights, Confined Space and Breathing Apparatus training using our purpose built simulation unit complete with all equipment. Let us come to you and deliver the full experience at your workplace. Call now for group booking prices and availability.

There are no prerequisite requirements for the following units:

RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined space
MSMPER205 Enter confined space
MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres
MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus

However, the following prerequisites apply to the unit PUASAR025 Undertake confined space rescue in relation to the fire sector. The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services. It is essential that the prerequisite units listed below are obtained by individuals working within the fire sector or the units contributing to the attainment of a fire qualification prior to attending our confined space course.

  • PUAFIR306 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident
  • PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation.

To successfully undertake this course, participants must:

  • Have a basic level of written and spoken English
    • Be able to read, interpret and complete permits, safety documentation and workplace reports
    • Have basic numeracy skills to perform time calculations, gas monitoring and equipment-related tasks
    • Be physically capable of entering and working within confined spaces
    • Be able to safely wear and operate safety harnesses and breathing apparatus
    • Have practical experience in worksite risk management, implementation of risk controls and safe work practices

  • Provide proof of holding previously issued nationally recognised units of competency from any training package that cover the following topics:
    • Confined space entry
    • Confined space rescue
    • Working in accordance with a permit
    • Gas testing
    • Breathing apparatus use

OR

  • Provide evidence of non-accredited training that can be verified, demonstrating clear training outcomes across all the above topics.

Participants undertaking clustered refresher training must also provide evidence of prior workplace experience in the relevant context(s) by completing a self-declaration.

In order to avoid common issues experienced around Breathing Apparatus ‘Fit Check’, students are required to make any adjustments to their facial hair prior to attending the training session at CTG. This can be achieved by clean shaving or only having facial hair which will not interfere with the fitting surfaces and parts of the breathing apparatus face mask. The correct fit of a mask requires contact with smooth skin. This makes masks unsuitable for men with beards or moustaches.

Please contact us for more information.

Training includes:

  • Permit systems and compliance documentation
  • Confined space entry and risk assessment
  • Hazard identification and control measures
  • Atmospheric testing and continuous gas monitoring
  • Use, inspection and operation of breathing apparatus
  • Rescue planning and confined space rescue techniques
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Communication systems and standby requirements
  • Environmental protection requirements
  • Inspection and use of rescue and retrieval equipment
  • Working in accordance with issued permits
  • Breathing apparatus equipment and its functions

Each confined space refresher course is facilitated by a member of our highly experienced training team in Melbourne and includes trainer presentations and practical activities – so your participation will be required! Assessment activities include a knowledge test and satisfactory demonstration of practical skills in a simulated environment. At successful completion of the course, you’ll be awarded a national Statement of Attainment with the above units of competency listed as proof of training and assessment.

This course is delivered over 1 intensive day.

(Please note that the complementary CPR is an additional 4 hour course). The course can be conducted at our Rowville training facility in Melbourne or onsite.

Pre-learning and a pre-theory assessment are mandatory and must be completed prior to attendance, ensuring face-to-face training time is focused on practical application and assessment.

You are required to wear suitable clothing (shirt and pants/jeans) and enclosed footwear (closed toe shoes). CTG will provide you with hi-vis vests and other PPE and equipment required for training and assessment.

The cost of the Confined Space Refresher Training is $380.00 per person GST Free

*Surcharge will apply on private bookings during weekends

  1. Why do councils and water authorities prefer this course?

Councils, water authorities and utilities choose this course because it delivers full confined space capability, not just a basic entry ticket.

This course covers:
• Permit systems
• Gas testing and monitoring
• Breathing apparatus
• Confined space rescue

These competencies are commonly required on water, sewer, drainage and infrastructure sites.

By completing this clustered course, workers meet multiple compliance requirements in one program, reducing repeat training, administration and downtime.

  1. How does this course reduce risk for councils and utilities?

This course is designed around real confined space hazards commonly encountered by councils and water authorities, including:
• Pits
• Tanks
• Pump stations
• Chambers
• Underground assets

Training includes:
• Permit-based entry systems
• Atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring
• Breathing apparatus use
• Confined space rescue procedures

This significantly reduces the risk of unsafe entry, incorrect gas monitoring and unplanned rescue attempts.

  1. Does this course meet water authority and infrastructure site expectations?

Yes. This course was developed in consultation with industry and reflects the expectations of water boards, councils and infrastructure asset owners.

Many sites now require workers to hold:
• Confined space entry units
• Gas test atmospheres
• Permit-based work training
• Rescue capability

  1. Is this suitable for council maintenance and operational crews?

Yes. This course is ideal for:
• Water and sewer maintenance teams
• Drainage and stormwater crews
• Civil works and infrastructure teams
• Mechanical and electrical maintenance staff
• Emergency response and standby rescue personnel

Training recognises that participants are experienced workers and is delivered in a practical, efficient format.

  1. Why is clustered training better for employers?

Clustered training means:
• Fewer separate courses
• Less time off the job
• Reduced administrative burden
• Consistent training standards across teams
• Improved compliance and audit readiness

For councils and utilities managing large workforces, this results in lower training costs and stronger workforce capability.

  1. Why choose Construction Training Group?

Construction Training Group is trusted by councils, utilities and major contractors because we deliver practical, job-relevant training, not generic theory.

Our confined space training focuses on:
• Real-world scenarios
• Industry-experienced trainers
• Compliance with Victorian legislation
• Practical assessment, not shortcuts

This is why employers continue to send their teams back to CTG.

  1. Do I need prior confined space training?

Participants must have current or recent industry experience in an operational role.

  1. Is this nationally recognised?

Yes. All units delivered are nationally recognised, and you will receive a Statement of Attainment upon successful completion.

  1. Is CPR included?

Yes. Complimentary CPR is included at no additional cost.

  1. Do I need to be clean shaven?

For the breathing apparatus unit, facial hair must not interfere with the mask seal. A fit check is conducted on the day, and this requirement is strictly enforced.

  1. Will I complete practical training?

Yes. This course includes extensive hands-on practical training, including:
• Confined space entry
• Gas testing
• Breathing apparatus use
• Rescue simulations

  1. How long is the qualification valid?

Validity depends on employer, Australian Standards, site and industry requirements. Many employers and the Australian Standard require refresher training every 1 to 2 years.

  1. What happens if I don’t pass?

If you are deemed not yet competent, your trainer will explain the reassessment requirements where applicable.

Why train with Construction Training Group?

  • Nationally recognised training
    • Industry-experienced trainers
    • Real confined space and rescue simulations
    • Modern equipment and facilities
    • Trusted by councils, utilities and major contractors
    • Training aligned with real site requirements

This course is built by and for people who actually work in confined spaces, not just tick boxes.
