Verification of Competency

Employers Beware!

Employers Beware!

Have you employed a plant operator lately?
Have you just inducted a contractor onto your site?

If you answered yes, here’s the next question — have you actually checked that they’re still competent to operate that machine?

Just because there’s no Worksafe High-Risk Licence required for certain equipment doesn’t remove your legal and safety obligations. Employers must still ensure that all operators are trained, competent and keep records of such evidence on every piece of plant and equipment employees operate — whether or not a Worksafe High Risk Licence is required.

In fact even with a Worksafe High Risk Work Licence the same rules apply with ongoing training and assessment of employees!

Why VOCs Matter

A Verification of Competency (VOC) is an essential part of managing risk and compliance on any worksite. It confirms that workers have the current knowledge and practical skills to safely operate plant and equipment.

Even if an employee or contractor already holds a ticket or licence, their skills can lapse over time — particularly if they haven’t used the machine recently or if work practices and safety standards have changed. Likewise, new employees operating non-ticketed plant must still have their competency verified before use.

By conducting regular VOCs, employers can demonstrate compliance with their duty of care, reduce the risk of incidents, and ensure every operator is capable and confident.

Your Responsibilities as an Employer

Employers must cover all regulatory training requirements, including high-risk licences, spotters tickets, plant tickets, confined space tickets, and ongoing competency checks.

Regular VOC assessments are the simplest and most effective way to:

  • Identify knowledge or skill gaps for retraining
  • Verify skills on both high risk and non-high risk machines
  •  Keep operators compliant and safe
  • Protect your business from liability

Employing new members of staff for your team is great, but to ensure you keep the rest of your team and your business safe, you may want to verify their qualifications or level of competency. This verification will ensure that they are trained to the right level, and know how to use all the equipment they need to before they start to use any earthmoving equipment. If they pass they are safe to operate the machinery, and if they don’t pass, you will know what areas they need training in to get them to the right skill and knowledge level for their role. At Construction Training Group we offer verification of competency, and can even come to you to verify your worker’s competence.

Construction Training Group (CTG), has nearly 20 years of experience in providing high-quality training and assessment to the construction industry. Over that time we have been able to learn what works, and what doesn’t, and we have evolved our service offerings with the needs of our customers. We have developed a reputation as a reputable company that provides high quality, affordable training, conducted by knowledgeable trainers. We work with individuals who want to take charge of their own careers, and businesses, both small and large, to develop customised training that will ensure their employees all have up to date training.

What is a VOC?

A VOC is a form of assessment designed to ensure that all staff can safely and competently operate certain equipment. Once completed, if all staff pass you will receive verification that your staff can operate the machine they need to use safely, if they don’t pass, you will be able to address these gaps in knowledge to make your workplace, and your employees safer. Even if new staff come to you with a ‘ticket’ and years of experience, having their skills and knowledge verified will ensure that those skills are double-checked. If an unfortunate accident happens, you will be able to show that all employees have been properly trained and verified, therefore you have done everything possible to prevent an incident from happening.

VOC’s are essential for preventing accidents, preventing damage to equipment, showing employees that you value their safety and helping them to stay eligible to operate everything necessary for their job. It will also help to make sure that everyone stays up to date and competent when technology gets updated.

In simple terms, VOC works like this…

Before someone starts using a piece of earthmoving equipment you conduct an assessment to prove they have the knowledge and skills to operate the machine safely. If they pass then you have verified that they are competent. If they do not pass, you have identified gaps in the operators knowledge and/or skill and can organise training to address those gaps. Workers are changing careers everyday and operators are taking on new roles constantly – so currency of knowledge and skills is just as important as holding a ‘ticket’ which may not have been used for a long time. Construction Training Group with our experienced range of trainers on hand conducts VOC’s on all types of plant. We can come to you and put your workers through a range of assessments to verify their current competence. Please contact one of our friendly staff for bookings.
